A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE WORK OF NURSE JEAN SANDERS HOPKINS, A CHERISHED CITIZEN OF RICHLAND COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HER SEVENTY-SEVENTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER MANY MORE YEARS OF PROSPERITY AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly note with pleasure that Jean Sanders Hopkins will celebrate her seventy-seventh birthday on April 19, 2008; and

Whereas, born in Lykesland, South Carolina, on April 19, 1931, Jean Hopkins grew up in the Waverly and Saxon Homes of Columbia; and

Whereas, in 1953, she earned a degree in registered nursing from the then-segregated Columbia Hospital School of Nursing and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of South Carolina in 1976; and

Whereas, her career included positions as a senior public health nurse with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and as a nursing instructor at South Carolina State University; and

Whereas, after thirty years of professional nursing experience, Jean Hopkins retired from her position as assistant chief of nursing at Columbia's Dorn Veterans Administration Hospital in 1993; and

Whereas, since her retirement, she has continued to use her nursing skills to benefit her community as a board member of the Palmetto Health Alliance, an at-large member of the Board of Trustees of Richland Memorial Hospital, the director of health services at Allen University, and a substitute nurse in Richland County School District One; and

Whereas, meeting a variety of needs in her community, Jean Hopkins serves on the Booker T. Washington Foundation Board of Directors, the Columbia Housing Authority Advisory Board, the National Youth Sports Program Advisory Board, the Board of Directors of the United Black Fund of the Midlands, and as a life member of both the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the National Council of Negro Women; and

Whereas, she is a co-founder of the Greater Columbia Council on the Prevention of Teenage Pregnancy and a participant in sickle cell anemia screenings throughout the community; and

Whereas, Jean Hopkins has authored and co-authored numerous articles on health care and nursing practices and initiated the format for The Memoirs of Sadie F. Nickpeay, which chronicles the life of an African American nurse midwife in South Carolina; and

Whereas, in 1989, the Columbia Housing Authority included her on its Wall of Fame, and in 2001 the University of South Carolina added her portrait to the mural that outlines the school's history and highlights outstanding nursing professionals; and

Whereas, she received the 1995 Distinguished Service Award from the National Council of Negro Women, the 2000 Woman of Achievement Award from the Governor's Commission on Women, the Young Women's Christian Association of the Midlands 2002 TWIN Diamond Award for community service, and the March of Dimes Living Legacy Award in 2007; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful for the years of dedication to the nursing profession that Jean Sanders Hopkins has contributed to the citizens of our great State and celebrate her seventy-seventh birthday with pleasure. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the work of nurse Jean Sanders Hopkins, a cherished citizen of Richland County, upon the occasion of her seventy-seventh birthday, and wish her many more years of prosperity and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jean Sanders Hopkins.
