A JOINT RESOLUTION TO DESIGNATE THE NEW BRIDGE OVER ROCKY RIVER NEAR LOWNDESVILLE IN ABBEVILLE COUNTY THE W. D. NIXON BRIDGE.
Whereas, W. D. Nixon is a native of Abbeville County, having lived in the Lowndesville section of this county all of his life; and
Whereas, W. D. Nixon has served the Lowndesville Community as Mayor of Lowndesville, as Magistrate of Lowndesville Township, as a deacon of the Lowndesville Baptist Church, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Lowndesville High School; and
Whereas, W. D. Nixon has served the County of Abbeville on the County Council, having been elected twice as its chairman; has served his county as Chairman of the Democratic Party; and has been a member of the Board of Registration for Abbeville County; and
Whereas, W. D. Nixon has served the State of South Carolina as an employee of the Public Service Commission and as a member of the House of Representatives from Abbeville for three terms; and
Whereas, W. D. Nixon has been a strong proponent of the Richard B. Russell Dam and has been instrumental in its construction; and
Whereas, it is necessary in the construction of this project to relocate a portion of Highway 81 and to build a new bridge over Rocky River outside Lowndesville; and
Whereas, because of W. D. Nixon's life of dedication to public service to his community, county and State and because of his interest in the Richard B. Russell project which will be adjacent to the Lowndesville Community, the General Assembly finds that the new bridge over Rocky River should be named in honor of W. D. Nixon. Now therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
W.D. Nixon Bridge
Section 1. The new bridge over Rocky River near Lowndesville in Abbeville County is designated the W. D. Nixon Bridge. The Department of Highways and Public Transportation shall install appropriate markers or signs at places on the bridge as it deems advisable containing the words "W. D. Nixon Bridge".
Time effective
Section 2. This act shall take effect upon the approval by the Governor.
