A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE CITADEL BASEBALL COACH CHAL PORT ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FOR HIS TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS OF OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AND HIS DEVELOPMENT OF A WINNING TRADITION AS COACH OF THE CITADEL BULLDOGS BASEBALL TEAM.

Whereas, Coach Chal Port left as the Citadel's most successful baseball coach with a winning record of 641-386-2 over twenty-seven years; and

Whereas, Coach Port led the Citadel Bulldogs to seven regular season Southern Conference championships and was chosen as the Southern Conference Coach of the Year six times; and

Whereas, Coach Port led the 1990 Citadel baseball team to a win in the Atlantic Regional, earning the school its first trip to the College World Series and finishing the season ranked No. 6 in the final Collegiate Baseball poll with a record of 46-14; and

Whereas, Coach Port made outstanding contributions to the Citadel athletic program with a record that boasts of twelve players continuing their baseball careers in the professional ranks and Coach Port emphasized the importance of education to his student athletes as evidenced by the fact that all but three of his players graduated during his twenty-seven year career as coach of the Citadel Bulldogs baseball team. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly proudly recognize coach Chal Port on the occasion of his retirement for his twenty-seven years of outstanding leadership and his development of a winning tradition as coach of the Citadel Bulldogs baseball team.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Chal Port.
