A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 2-1-185, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE ANNUAL INCREASES IN THE COMPENSATION OF MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, SO AS TO CHANGE THE EFFECTIVE DATE FOR COMPENSATION INCREASES FOR SENATORS TO COINCIDE WITH THE BEGINNING OF THE 1993 SESSION.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Section 2-1-185 of the 1976 Code is amended to read:

"Section 2-1-185. Beginning with compensation paid to members of the General Assembly House of Representatives for the 1991 session and compensation to be paid to members of the Senate for the 1993 session, the compensation of members of the General Assembly must be increased annually by the same total percentage of cost of living adjustments provided for state employees' salaries in the last completed fiscal year before the applicable session of the General Assembly. The compensation paid to Senators beginning in 1993 must be adjusted by the cumulation of cost-of-living adjustments which have been authorized so as to establish compensation at the same rate as will be provided for members of the House of Representatives in the 1993 session."

Section 2. Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 3A of Part I of Act 612 of 1990, the salary for Senators for the 1991 session shall be $10,000 per annum. The Senate is directed to reduce the amount of in-district compensation paid to a Senator so as to effect a reduction of $400 in the total amount of in-district compensation paid to a member of the Senate during calendar year 1991.

Section 3. This Act takes effect upon approval of the Governor.
