A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

REQUESTING THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION TO INFORM THE SCIENCE TEACHERS IN THE STATE'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS THAT, CONSISTENT WITH THE EXPRESSIONS OF THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT IN EDWARDS V. AGUILLARD, THEY HAVE THE FREEDOM AND FLEXIBILITY TO SUPPLEMENT THE PRESENT SCIENCE CURRICULUM WITH THE PRESENTATION OF VARIOUS METHODS OF THE ORIGINS OF LIFE, AND OF HUMANKIND IN PARTICULAR, AND REQUESTING THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT TO INFORM THE SCIENCE TEACHERS ACCORDINGLY WITHIN NINETY DAYS OF THE ADOPTION OF THIS RESOLUTION AND TO REPORT TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly, by this resolution, requests the State Superintendent of Education to inform the science teachers in the public schools of this State that, consistent with the expressions of the United State Supreme Court in Edwards v. Aguillard, 482 U.S. 578, 96 L.Ed.2d 510, 107 S.Ct. 2573 (1987), as to what is permissible under the United States Constitution, they have the freedom and flexibility to supplement the present science curriculum with the presentation of various methods of the origins of life, and of humankind in particular, if done with the secular intent of enhancing the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of science instruction.

Be it further resolved that the State Superintendent of Education is requested to inform the science teachers accordingly within ninety days of the adoption of this resolution by the General Assembly and is further requested to report to the General Assembly within twelve months of the adoption of this resolution that the notification has been sent to the science teachers.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the State Superintendent of Education.
