A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO MEMORIALIZE CONGRESS TO ESTABLISH A NATIONAL CEMETERY ON THE PROPERTY WHICH IS NOW MYRTLE BEACH AIR FORCE BASE.

Whereas, three thousand four hundred acres will soon be available when Myrtle Beach Air Force Base is closed; and

Whereas, there are only two national cemeteries in South Carolina; and

Whereas, Florence and Beaufort have projected closing in 1997 and 2008 respectively; and

Whereas, North Carolina has four national cemeteries, two of which, Wilmington and Raleigh, are closed, New Bern is to close in June, and Salisbury anticipates closing in 2020; and

Whereas, federal agencies have first priority on the use of military bases which are closed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That Congress is memorialized to establish a national cemetery on the property which is now Myrtle Beach Air Force Base.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, to each member of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation, and to the Department of Memorial Affairs.
