MEMORIALIZING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO NOT EXEMPT THEMSELVES FROM LAWS THAT BUSINESSES, PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS, COLLEGES, AND STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS MUST OBEY.
Whereas, the President of the United States and the members of Congress are exempted from many of the laws which affect every citizen of this country; and
Whereas, there are ten laws that do not apply to the President or his executive staff; and
Whereas, these laws include:
(1) Title VII of 1964 Civil Rights Act
(2) Americans with Disabilities Act
(3) Age Discrimination Act
(4) Equal Pay Law
(5) Social Security Act
(6) National Labor Relations Act
(7) Fair Labor Standards Act
(8) Minimum Wage Law
(9) Rehabilitation Act
(10) Freedom of Information Act; and
Whereas, to some qualified extent, they also do not apply in many cases to the members of the United States House of Representatives and the members of the United States Senate; and
Whereas, our founding fathers did not envision a system of government whereby the exemption to certain laws should be afforded to the executive and legislative branches in the preposterous manner in which it has evolved. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the President of the United States and the members of Congress are memorialized to not exempt themselves from laws that businesses, private institutions, colleges, and state and local governments must obey.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and to each member of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation.
