TO COMMEND DR. LARRY A. JACKSON, PRESIDENT OF LANDER COLLEGE, FOR HIS TRULY EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AS PRESIDENT OF THIS FINE INSTITUTION SINCE 1973 UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned with deep regret that Dr. Larry A. Jackson, President of Lander College, will be retiring later this spring; and
Whereas, Larry Jackson became president of Lander College in 1973, the same year it became a state-supported institution, and under his leadership Lander has become one of the most vibrant liberal arts colleges in South Carolina and in the Southeast; and
Whereas, there are many examples of the impact of this outstanding educator. The number of students has increased almost four-fold from 925 when he came in 1973, to a present enrollment of 2,706 in 1992. The physical plant of the college has been substantially improved due in part to almost forty-three million dollars of capital improvement funds which have been authorized by the General Assembly for Lander since he became president. Perhaps his most important contribution is the spirit and vitality of the faculty, staff, and students which cannot be measured in dollars and cents or in bricks and mortar; and
Whereas, Dr. Jackson is a native of Florence, South Carolina, is a graduate of Wofford College, and holds two master's degrees and four honorary doctorates from prestigious colleges and universities throughout the United States; and
Whereas, prior to becoming an educator, Larry Jackson was a minister for six years and his ministerial training and experience may be responsible for his very special gifts in working with people; and
Whereas, in addition to his leadership of Lander, he has somehow found the time to be a very active civic and community leader in Greenwood and in South Carolina. Among his many community and civic endeavors, he has served as president of the United Way, and Rotary, committee chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, and chairman of the board of trustees of the Governor's School of Science and Mathematics; and
Whereas, he has been blessed throughout his professional life with an able and loving companion in his wife, Barbara, who together since their marriage in 1953 have raised four talented and successful children; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and thank this truly outstanding South Carolinian for his devoted, enlightened, and innovative service as president of Lander College upon the occasion of his upcoming retirement. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend Dr. Larry A. Jackson, President of Lander College, for his truly exceptional service as president of this fine institution since 1973 upon the occasion of his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Jackson.
