A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF SPARTANBURG AS IT CELEBRATES ITS ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY FEBRUARY 22-24, 1991, AND TO COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the Second Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg celebrates its One Hundredth Anniversary February 22-24, 1991; and

Whereas, the Centennial Celebration includes an ice cream social, exhibits, pig pickin', square dance, and appropriate services to remember the years of growth and ministration; and

Whereas, the Second Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg has distinguished itself by operating a soup kitchen since 1980 and sponsoring the Haven; and

Whereas, on February 23, 1891, the Spartanburg Mills Presbyterian Church was organized with J. A. Stewart and Jesse Jackson as elders, who performed the duties of both elders and deacons, and the following members: Miss M. J. Bentley, B. Harvey Howe, Miss E. D. Howe, Mrs. Jesse Jackson, Miss Bridgett Pitman, Mrs. J. A. Stewart, Dr. R. A. Turner, Miss Ida West, and Mrs. R. A. Turner; and

Whereas, the church worshipped in a temporary structure erected by the Ladies Aid Society of the First Presbyterian Church until the church decided to erect a permanent structure. The work was fostered by the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Ravenel donated a lot on Wofford and Wolfe Streets where a building was erected, and R. H. F. Chapman raised the funds for it by subscription. The lot was conveyed to H. E. Ravenel, H. E. Heintisch, N. F. Walker, W. B. Hallett, R. H. F. Chapman, and J. M. Lee, deacons of the First Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, a building was erected and used for about fifteen years, paid for chiefly by people of the First Presbyterian Church. It was owned by the Board of Deacons of that church, the church having a succession of pastors and remaining a mission of the First Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, during these years the name of the church was changed to the Second Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. Dr. J. S. Watkins, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, aided the Second Presbyterian Church in every way possible; and

Whereas, celebration of the Sunday School Mission's One Hundredth Birthday was held last September; and

Whereas, the Centennial Planning Committee is composed of Jane Frost Anderson, Linda Crissinger, Emily Reid, Hallie Foster, Jimmy Hilton, and Ray Eubanks, Chairman; and

Whereas, Dr. Norman E. Lassiter is the present pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly recognize the Second Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg as it celebrates its One Hundredth Anniversary February 22-24, 1991, and commend the church for one hundred years of service to the community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Lassiter.
