A BILL

TO AMEND CHAPTER 1, TITLE 59, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-1-375, RELATING TO EDUCATION, SO AS TO REQUIRE PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS TO BE INSTRUCTED IN THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF MEMORIAL DAY AND TO REQUIRE OBSERVANCE OF THIS HOLIDAY.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Chapter 1, Title 59, of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-1-375. Beginning with the 1990-91 school year, all public schools shall be closed on Memorial Day in recognition of and to honor veterans of the armed services of the United States. Prior to observance of this holiday, all public school students shall be instructed about the historical signficance of the Memorial Day holiday and the sacrifices on behalf of the United States made by its military veterans."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
