TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS AND ADMIRERS OF COLONEL JAMES POTTER RATHBUN OF BRICKYARD POINT PLANTATION ON LADY'S ISLAND.
Whereas, Colonel James Potter Rathbun of Brickyard Point Plantation on Lady's Island, died Wednesday, January 27, 1993; and
Whereas, Colonel Rathbun was born in Otisville, New York, the son of the late Dr. Walter L. and Grace Fitch Rathbun. He was a 1940 graduate of Duke University, served in the Marine Corps in World War II in the Pacific Theater, and was a career officer of twenty-seven years, retiring in 1968; and
Whereas, he was an ardent environmentalist, active in marine and coastal issues, a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conservation Association of South Carolina and served as its legislative chair, and a member of the Sierra Club, the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, South Carolina Coastal Conservation League, and the Victoria Bluff Task Force. Colonel Rathbun was named Conservationist of the Year by the South Carolina Wildlife Federation in 1987, and was a recipient of the Senator James M. Waddell Award by Friends of the Coast in 1991; and
Whereas, surviving are his wife, Elaine B. Rathbun; two sons, James P. Rathbun, Jr., of Manassas, Virginia, and Walter L. Rathbun of Charleston; a daughter, Mary R. Lennon of San Anselmo, California; two brothers, Walter L. Rathbun of West Palm Beach, Florida, and William Rathbun of New Hartford, New York; a sister, Grace Reed of Beaufort; and two grandchildren. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate extend their deepest sympathy to the family and many friends and admirers of Colonel James Potter Rathbun of Brickyard Point Plantation on Lady's Island.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Colonel Rathbun.
