EXPRESSING THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO JOE PINNER, ONE OF THE MOST RECOGNIZED AND BELOVED MEDIA FIGURES IN SOUTH CAROLINA, ON COMPLETION OF THIRTY YEARS' SERVICE WITH WIS-TV IN COLUMBIA AND WISHING HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN AN OUTSTANDING CAREER IN BROADCASTING.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are delighted to note that May 27, 1993, marks the thirtieth anniversary of Joe Pinner joining WIS-TV in Columbia, where Mr. Pinner serves as weatherman for the Seven O'Clock Report, co-host and weatherman on WIS News Midday with Carolyn Sawyer, and as Mr. Knozit; and
Whereas, Joe Pinner began a distinguished career in broadcasting at a radio station in Morehead City, North Carolina, at age fifteen and after graduating from high school, he attended the University of North Carolina where he worked at a Chapel Hill radio station, then returned home to New Bern, North Carolina, to continue his broadcasting career; and
Whereas, in 1955, Joe Pinner joined WMBR-TV/Radio in Jacksonville, Florida, from there he entered service in the United States Army for two years and was stationed at Fort Jackson where he managed the armed forces radio station, WFJX; and
Whereas, after leaving the Army, Mr. Pinner returned to Jacksonville until he joined WIS in May of 1963; and
Whereas, in addition to his broadcasting duties with WIS, Mr. Pinner is involved in numerous activities around the State, as an annual participant in the Grand Strand Sun Fun Festival, as narrator and master of ceremonies for the Youth Concerts of the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, as a member of the board of directors of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and as a member of the Media Club; and
Whereas, his dedication to broadcasting and community service has brought him many awards and much recognition, including the George Foster Peabody Award for his work on the Mr. Knozit Show, the South Carolina Tourism Award presented to him by the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce for his contributions to the growth and development of the state's tourism industry, as a laureate of the Order of the Palmetto, presented in 1982 by Governor Richard Riley, as a recipient of the State Tourism Award by the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, the Lyre Award of the Columbia Music Festival Association in recognition of his promoting the arts in Columbia, the Columbia College Medallion for his outstanding service to the college and community, the Columbia Advertising Club's 1988 Person of the Year, and the Toastmasters District 58 Communications and Leadership Award recipient; and
Whereas, in 1989, in recognition of his long-time association with Fort Jackson and his great contribution in promoting the esteem and affection in which the post is held by the people of the Midlands, the post commander, Major General George Krausz promoted Joe Pinner to honorary command sergeant major; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might recognize the distinguished career and outstanding contributions to the life of this State played by so distinguished a South Carolinian and to wish for him continued success and service. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express congratulations to Joe Pinner, one of the most recognized and beloved media figures in South Carolina, on completion of thirty years' service with WIS-TV in Columbia and wish him continued success in an outstanding career in broadcasting.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Pinner.
