A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING DR. R. BRUCE DUNLAP, A CANCER RESEARCHER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, UPON BEING SELECTED TO RECEIVE THE GOVERNOR'S 1994 "EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE AWARENESS AWARD", ONE OF THE STATE'S HIGHEST HONORS FOR SCIENTISTS.

Whereas, members of the General Assembly were delighted to learn that Dr. R. Bruce Dunlap, Director of Basic Research at the South Carolina Center for Cancer Treatment and Research and a cancer volunteer, received the 1994 "Excellence in Science Awareness Award" presented by Governor Carroll Campbell on Thursday, March 24, 1994; and

Whereas, as a member of the South Carolina Division of the American Cancer Society's Board of Directors for 18 years, Dr. Dunlap has appeared before more than 200 groups, including civic organizations throughout the State, to discuss cancer research and prevention; and

Whereas, Dr. Dunlap has worked tirelessly on cancer-related research for many years and also has played a key role in the development of the Center for Cancer Treatment and Research; and

Whereas, Dr. Dunlap has authored more than 150 articles, books, and chapters, received numerous awards and honors, including R & D magazine's Top 100 Innovations in Science and Technology Award, which he shared with USC Professor Dr. Jerry Odom in 1993. This award recognized a patented process that the team developed with Louis Silks, III, of Los Alamos National Laboratory for detecting molecular impurities that can cause side effects in drugs; and

Whereas, as a faculty member in both chemistry and medicine, Dr. Dunlap says one of his goals is to improve cooperation and communications between scientists and clinicians working in cancer research; and

Whereas, among his honors are the American Cancer Society's Faculty Research Award, 1976-1980; USC's Russell Award for Research in Science and Engineering, in 1987; and the USC School of Medicine's Basic Science Research Award, 1992; and

Whereas, the Science Awareness Award which Dr. Dunlap won is sponsored by the Dewees Island Company, Harbor Watch, General Engineering Laboratories, the Governor' Office, and the South Carolina Academy of Science. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates Dr. R. Bruce Dunlap, a cancer researcher at the University of South Carolina, upon being selected to receive the Governor's 1994 "Excellence in Science Awareness Award", one of the state's highest honors for scientists.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. R. Bruce Dunlap.
