A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND A HEARTY WELCOME TO THE COLORADO SILVER BULLETS, THE FIRST ALL WOMEN'S PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL TEAM SINCE THE 1950'S, TO FORT MILL, SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR THE OPENING GAME OF THEIR FIRST SEASON AT KNIGHTS CASTLE STADIUM, TO WELCOME THEM TO THE GREAT SPORT OF BASEBALL, AND TO WISH THEM THE BEST OF LUCK IN THE UPCOMING SEASON.

Whereas, on Sunday, May 8, 1994, fitting for Mother's Day, the Colorado Silver Bullets, the first women's professional baseball team since the 1950's, is playing the opening game of its first season at the Knights Castle Stadium in Fort Mill, South Carolina against the Northern League All-Stars; and

Whereas, the Silver Bullets are sponsored by Coors Brewing Company and are embarking upon a rigorous fifty-game first season against semipro, minor league, and over-30 teams of men; and

Whereas, the team will travel from their spring training camp in Winter Haven, Florida, to games as far as Vancouver, British Columbia with 49 games in between including playing at the venerable Candlestick Park; and

Whereas, the 24 women on the Silver Bullets roster were selected from among 1,700 women who tried out across the country for a treasured spot on this trailblazing team; and

Whereas, until Coors "bit the bullet" these women, lovers of baseball since childhood, had been relegated to playing softball, a great women's game, but not as commanding of the prestige or popularity as America's favorite pastime; and

Whereas, it is proper and fitting to welcome the Silver Bullets to South Carolina and to their long-awaited place at the table, or more precisely on the diamond, as players, no longer spectators of America's favorite pastime, the beloved national game of baseball. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extends a hearty welcome to the Colorado Silver Bullets, the first all women's professional baseball team since the 1950's, to Fort Mill, South Carolina, Knights Castle Stadium, for the opening game of this historical first season, to welcome them as professional players of the great game of baseball, and to wish them well in their upcoming season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ruben Valdillez, Coors Brewing Company, 311 Tenth Street, NH470, Golden, Colorado 80401, and Silver Bullets manager, Phil Niekro, Whittle Sports Properties, 333 Main Street, Knoxville, Tennessee 37902.
