A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE JENNINGS K. OWENS, JR., M.D., OF BENNETTSVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR RECEIVING THE PRESTIGIOUS ORDER OF THE PALMETTO AWARD.

Whereas, Jennings K. Owens, Jr., M.D., of Bennettsville, South Carolina, received the state's highest award when recognized by Governor Campbell for his many professional and civic contributions to the State of South Carolina and particularly to Marlboro County when he was given the Order of the Palmetto Award by Governor Campbell; and

Whereas, Dr. Owens, a retired board certified surgeon, practiced exclusively in Marlboro County as a general surgeon for over thirty years. During this time he served as chief of staff and chief of surgery at Marlboro General Hospital; and

Whereas, he is a graduate of Bennettsville High School and Wofford College and received his medical training at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston; and

Whereas, Dr. Owens is a member of the American College of Surgeons and a founding member of the South Carolina Oncology Society of which he later served as president; and

Whereas, Dr. Owens' professional, civic, and community accomplishments and contributions span decades and demonstrate his dedication, and commitment to serving the public; and

Whereas, he has served at all levels of local government; he has been a member of the Marlboro County School District Board of Education and the Bennettsville Area School District Board of Education and served as Mayor of Bennettsville, and later as Interim Supervisor of Marlboro County; and

Whereas, Dr. Owens was instrumental in bringing about the consolidation of the public high schools in Marlboro County, in establishing new hospitals in the Bennettsville and Cheraw communities and initiated the building fund for the renovation and revitalization of the Marlboro County Parks and Recreation Building; and

Whereas, Dr. Owens continues the tradition of those physicians from rural South Carolina who have provided leadership in their communities and who have distinguished themselves by service through participation in civic organizations and local government. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, hereby congratulate Jennings K. Owens, Jr., M.D., of Bennettsville, South Carolina, for receiving the prestigious award of the Order of the Palmetto.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Owens.
