TO RECOGNIZE WALTER B. PURCELL UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS DIRECTOR OF THE OCONEE COUNTY EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AGENCY AND TO WISH HIM WELL IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Walter B. Purcell is retiring as director of the Oconee County Emergency Preparedness Agency; and
Whereas, Mr. Purcell was born and raised initially in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he attended Taylor-Alderice High School. During this period he was noted for his boxing and football abilities; and
Whereas, during World War II, he joined the United States Army at the age of sixteen, served as a paratrooper during World War II, and served during Korea and Vietnam. He served a total of twenty-six years active duty and retired at Fort Gordon, Georgia, in 1973; and
Whereas, after retiring from service Mr. Purcell went to work at Reigel Textile Corporation in LaFrance, South Carolina, as Material and Production Control Supervisor; and
Whereas, in 1975 he accepted the position of Production Control Supervisor with Torrington-Oconee Needle Plant, in Walhalla, South Carolina, and served until 1980; and
Whereas, in 1980, Mr. Purcell was appointed Director of Oconee County Emergency Preparedness Agency. During his tenure with Emergency Preparedness he has completed all emergency phase courses and other courses related to emergency management. He served as Vice President/State Representative of the South Carolina Civil Defense Directors Association for 1983-84 and as President of the Civil Defense Directors Association of South Carolina for 1984-85, receiving the Director of the Year Award, 1986-87; and
Whereas, throughout his career in the United States Army and Emergency Preparedness, Mr. Purcell also has been involved in Boy Scouts, Sertoma Club, VFW, church activities, boxing, and Clemson Football; and
Whereas, in 1950 he married Mary Adams, who is presently Assistant Director of Purchasing, Clemson University. They have three children who all graduated from Clemson University. He has one grandson who is destined to be a future football player for Clemson, says his grandfather; and
Whereas, the members of the Senate are proud to have this opportunity to note the accomplishments thus far in the life of Walter B. Purcell. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate recognize Walter B. Purcell upon his retirement as director of the Oconee County Emergency Preparedness Agency and wish him well in his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Purcell.
