A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MRS. MILDRED C. "MILLIE" BAGNAL OF CAYCE FOR HER LONG AND DISTINGUISHED CAREER AS AN EDUCATOR IN SOUTH CAROLINA UPON HER UPCOMING RETIREMENT.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned that one of South Carolina's most distinguished educators, Mrs. Mildred C. "Millie" Bagnal of Cayce, will be retiring later this year; and

Whereas, Millie Bagnal is Director of Adult, Vocational, and Community Education for Lexington County School District Two where since 1981 she has planned, organized, and executed the adult, vocational, and community education programs for the district; and

Whereas, she began her career as a home economist with the Clemson University Extension Service in 1957, and from that time to the present has served South Carolina's students both young and old with professionalism, devotion, and dedication; and

Whereas, she holds a B.S. degree in Home Economics from Winthrop University, a M.Ed. degree from the University of South Carolina in Community and Occupational Programs in Education, and has done additional graduate work at the National Center for Community Education, South Carolina State University, and the University of Tennessee; and

Whereas, the respect in which she is held is evidenced by a number of honors and awards including being named "South Carolina Home Economics Teacher of the Year" in 1978, receipt of the South Carolina Association for Adult Education Directors Leadership Award in 1988, and receipt of the South Carolina Vocational Association Distinguished Service Award in 1993; and

Whereas, Millie Bagnal also has served her community, State, and church in many other varied capacities. She helped mold important state legislation including the School to Work Transition Act, and she took the lead as an officer of a number of civic and professional organizations. She also is a loyal and long-time member of the Cayce United Methodist Church where she is past president of the Cayce United Methodist Women and past district chairman of the Columbia United Methodist Church Women; and

Whereas, she is above all a devoted wife to her husband, Jim, and wonderful mother to her two daughters, Jonolyn and Cynthia, who are now grown; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and thank this lovely and gracious lady for all that she has done for the people of Cayce, Lexington County, and the State of South Carolina as an educator and civic and community leader upon the occasion of her upcoming retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend Mrs. Mildred C. "Millie" Bagnal of Cayce for her long and distinguished career as an educator in South Carolina upon her upcoming retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Mildred C. "Millie" Bagnal.
