A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THEIR FRIEND AND FORMER COLLEAGUE, THE HONORABLE MILFORD "DOLLY" COOPER, FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE PIEDMONT COMMUNITY IN ANDERSON COUNTY AS HE CLOSES THE DOORS OF THE PIEDMONT ECONOMY STORE FIFTY-SEVEN YEARS AFTER HE OPENED IT FOR BUSINESS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned that the Honorable Milford J. "Dolly" Cooper of the Piedmont Community in Anderson County has announced his intention to close the doors of the Piedmont Economy Store in the next few months, after having operated the establishment for fifty-seven years; and

Whereas, the store dates from an era when a retailer in a small community stocked the business with everything from plows, to appliances, to clothing; and

Whereas, generations of residents had their needs well-provided for at the Piedmont Economy Store; and

Whereas, in an age of mass merchandising and vast retail establishments, it is satisfying to reflect on the great service that small retailers have provided and continue to provide to South Carolinians; and

Whereas, after retiring in 1990 from a career in the House of Representatives that began in 1975, it is a clear sign of the march of time that our friend is now planning his retirement from the family business; and

Whereas, we weigh the loss of this community landmark against the knowledge that Dolly will have more time to pursue his other interests and in so doing be of service to the community; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might express their appreciation for the career of their friend and colleague as he moves on to other interests and to wish him well in his future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express appreciation to their friend and former colleague, the Honorable Milford "Dolly" Cooper, for his service to the people of the Piedmont Community in Anderson County as he closes the doors of the Piedmont Economy Store fifty-seven years after he opened it for business.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Milford "Dolly" Cooper.
