A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-39-155 SO AS TO CREATE A COMMISSION APPOINTED BY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO GOVERN BEGINNING JULY 1, 1996, INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC AND OTHER ACTIVITIES NOW UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-39-155. Beginning July 1, 1996, a commission composed of nine members shall be appointed by the State Board of Education for the purpose of governing interscholastic athletic and other activities now under the jurisdiction of the South Carolina High School League and on and after July 1, 1996, and the South Carolina High School League shall no longer govern these activities. Commission members shall be representative of all areas of the State and all school sizes.

The members of the commission shall serve for terms of four years each and until their successors are appointed and qualify, except that of those members first appointed, four shall be appointed for terms of two years each. All members shall serve until their successors have been appointed and qualify. Vacancies shall be filled for the remainder of the unexpired term by appointment in the same manner of original appointment.

The members of the commission shall elect a chairman, vice chairman, and such other officers as it deems necessary to serve for a period of one year in these capacities. Members of the commission shall be paid the usual mileage, subsistence, and per diem as is provided by law to members of state boards, commissions, and committees."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
