TO COMMEMORATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ORDINATION OF THE REVEREND MONSIGNOR ROY FRANCIS AIKEN TO THE PRIESTHOOD OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH AND TO THANK HIM FOR HIS CAREER OF DEDICATED, FAITHFUL AND LOVING SERVICE TO HIS MANY FAMILY MEMBERS, FRIENDS, PARISHIONERS, AND TO ALL THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, Newman R. and Ellen Pressley Aiken were blessed with the birth of their son, Roy Francis Aiken on November 28, 1920 in Greenville, South Carolina; and
Whereas, young Roy Francis Aiken completed his secondary education at Greenville High School; and
Whereas, Roy Francis Aiken completed his theological studies at Saint Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore, Maryland; and
Whereas, His Excellency the Reverend Emmet M. Walsh, Bishop of Charleston, ordained Roy Francis Aiken as a priest in the Roman Catholic Church on June 15, 1946 in the Church of Saint Francis de Sales in New York City; and
Whereas, Monsignor Aiken was first assigned to the Church of Saint Peter in Columbia, South Carolina in 1946 where he served until 1950 when he became Vice Chancellor of the Diocese of Charleston; and
Whereas, Monsignor Aiken served as the first pastor of the Church of Saint Anthony in Walterboro from 1952 until 1967 and the first pastor of the Church of Saint Mary in Hampton from 1955 through 1967; and
Whereas, other pastorates held by Monsignor Aiken include Summerville's Saint John Church, the Church of Saint Mary in Aiken and the Saint Peter's Catholic Church in Columbia, South Carolina; and
Whereas, Monsignor Aiken's dedicated service and loving concern for his fellow man was further demonstrated while he served on the faculty of Cardinal Newman High School from 1980 through 1988 and as an Associate at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Columbia from 1987 through 1990; and
Whereas, Monsignor Aiken has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the North American Liturgical Conference and as Vicar for Finance of the Diocese of Charleston; and
Whereas, Monsignor Aiken has served his community as President of the Summerville Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Heart Fund and Cancer Drive in Charleston and has touched the lives of numerous citizens through his many pastoral and community works. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the South Carolina Senate commemorates the 50th anniversary of the ordination of The Reverend Monsignor Roy Francis Aiken to the priesthood of the Roman Catholic Church and thanks him for his career of dedicated, faithful and loving service to his many family members, friends, parishioners, and to the people of South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Monsignor Aiken.
