A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

MEMORIALIZING CONGRESS TO REMOVE THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA FROM COVERAGE OF THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT OF 1965.

Whereas, the State of South Carolina was subjected to the burdensome dictates of the Voting Rights Act, which was enacted by Congress in 1965; and

Whereas, in addition to South Carolina, the voting Rights Act affects Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Virginia, and thirty-seven counties in North Carolina; and

Whereas, there is no justification for South Carolina's remaining subject to the provisions of the Voting Rights Act, and it is an insult to the good people of South Carolina to continue to require the Palmetto State to meet these demeaning and unnecessary obligations. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, memorializes Congress to remove the State of South Carolina from coverage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and each member of South Carolina's Congressional Delegation, all at Washington, D.C.
