A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE HONORABLE LILLIAN BROCK FLEMMING OF GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR HER MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE GREENVILLE COUNTY SCHOOLS, THE CITY OF GREENVILLE, AND THE WHOLE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, Mrs. Lillian Brock Flemming, Mayor Pro Tempore for the Greenville City Council, holds a Master's Degree in Mathematics Education from Furman University and has studied also at Clemson University and the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mrs. Flemming serves on a number of boards and organizations which render valuable community service, such as Ronald McDonald House, Phyllis Wheatly Postfellows, National Education Association, and the Governor's Infant Mortality Subcommittee; and

Whereas, she was chosen the 1993 Woman of the Year by the Blue Ridge Council of Girl Scouts, and in 1993-94 she was third runner up for Teacher of the Year in Greenville County; and

Whereas, Mrs. Flemming was one of the first three black women to enter Furman University (undergraduate), one of the first two black women to graduate from Furman, the first black female elected to the Greenville City Council, the first black to be elected Vice Mayor Pro Tempore of City Council, and the first black to be elected Mayor Pro Tempore in the City of Greenville; and

Whereas, she has been involved in many community activities and projects over the years and is recognized as a true leader because of her abilities, insight, hard work, and commitment to excellence; and

Whereas, she is an outstanding lady who is highly deserving of recognition and commendation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes and commends the Honorable Lillian Brock Flemming of Greenville County for her many years of dedicated service to the Greenville County schools, the City of Greenville, and the whole community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Flemming.
