A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE RADIO STATION WUSC ON ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND THE STATION FOR THE MANY CONTRIBUTIONS IT HAS MADE TO THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO THE COLUMBIA AREA.

Whereas, on May 1, 1946, radio station WUSC received its first operator's permit and signed on the air for the first time in 1947 at 730KHz on the AM band; and

Whereas, deviating from typical station programming, WUSC changed its programming to progressive music in 1971; and

Whereas, WUSC went from a low power range at its inception to an increase to 3000 watts in the spring of 1983 when it changed frequency to 90.5 which enabled the station to serve not only the University of South Carolina community but the Columbia area as well; and

Whereas, some of the accomplishments of this station include being twice picked by Entertainment Weekly as one of the nation's ten best radio stations and being chosen to be a part of the team to assemble the 1992 SPIN magazine college issue; and

Whereas, employees of the station have participated in many worthwhile community programs including Adopt a Highway, alcohol and drug awareness drives, blood drives, voter registration drives, Adopt a Family at Christmas, and Save Sidney Park Rally; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly express sincere appreciation to the past and present station managers and employees of WUSC-FM for their dedication and commend this local radio station for over fifty years of continuous broadcasting. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly by this resolution express sincere appreciation to the past and present station managers and employees of WUCS-FM for their dedication and congratulate and commend this local radio station on its fiftieth anniversary and for its many contributions to the University of South Carolina and the Columbia area.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to WUSC-FM.
