Whereas, the Amtrak Silver Star, carrying two hundred sixty-five passengers and fourteen crew members, derailed in Allendale County at approximately 2:45 a.m. on May 2, 1995; and

Whereas, emergency medical services personnel from Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, and Hampton Counties and the Savannah River Site responded quickly to the emergency scene and were able to evacuate all passengers and crew members safely; and

Whereas, each passenger and crew member received the highest level of medical treatment from physicians and medical personnel associated with the Allendale, Barnwell, and Hampton County hospitals and from Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia; and

Whereas, food and emergency shelter were provided to the Amtrak passengers and crew members by the Allendale and Hampton County chapters of the American Red Cross, the Allendale County Department of Social Services, the Allendale County School District, and the Allendale County Emergency Preparedness Office; and

Whereas, the accident scene was secured by law enforcement officers employed by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Allendale County Sheriff's Department, the Town of Allendale Police Department, the Town of Fairfax Police Department, and firefighting units from the Towns of Allendale, Fairfax, Ulmer, and Hampton; and
