TO EXPRESS SUPPORT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR ADULT EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION WHICH OVERSEES ADULT EDUCATION IN THIS STATE.
Whereas, adult education programs in South Carolina have grown to include more than seventy thousand students in public school adult education; and
Whereas, one in six high school graduates in South Carolina is an adult; and
Whereas, adult education operates in all ninety-four school districts and has two hundred thirty-seven full-time and over sixteen hundred part-time instructors; and
Whereas, adult education in this State has the ninth highest enrollment among the fifty states; and
Whereas, adult education is a cost-effective program that has helped increase the educational level of its citizens from 30.6 percent with a high school diploma in 1980 to 42.5 percent in 1990; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, publicly declare and express their strong support for adult education in South Carolina and to the Department of Education which oversees such programs. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby express their strong support for adult education in South Carolina, for the citizens of this State enrolled in adult education classes, and for the Department of Education which oversees these programs.
Be it further resolved that the members of the General Assembly express their belief and recommendation that the responsibility for adult education should remain in the State Department of Education where it currently resides.
