A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 12-37-2740, AS AMENDED, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE SUSPENSION OF A DRIVER'S LICENSE AND MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION FOR NONPAYMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLE PROPERTY TAXES, SO AS TO DELETE THE CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH A DRIVER'S LICENSE MUST BE SUSPENDED AND TO REVISE THE CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH A MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION IS SUSPENDED.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Section 12-37-2740 of the 1976 Code, as last amended by Act 426 of 1992, is further amended to read:

"Section 12-37-2740. The department shall suspend the driver's license and motor vehicle registration of a person violating any provision of this article only upon notification, in a manner determined by the department, from the county treasurer or municipal clerk treasurer stating that property taxes owed by the person have not been paid within the time limit prescribed by this article who has not paid property taxes within the time limits prescribed in this article. A county treasurer or municipal clerk treasurer shall forward notification to the department of a person who has violated the provisions of this article. Notification of individuals violating this article must be forwarded to the department in a manner determined by the department for the proper administration of this section."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
