A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS STATE BY ROBERT E. HENDERSON PH.D., PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA RESEARCH AUTHORITY, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AND WISHING HIM WELL IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Dr. Robert E. Henderson came to South Carolina from Indiana in 1983 to serve as the first director of the then newly-formed South Carolina Research Authority, which was created by the General Assembly as a public corporation to promote development of the high technology segment of the state's economy; and

Whereas, Dr. Henderson has served as the first and only director of the South Carolina Research Authority, leading its growth from a start-up enterprise to one generating over thirty million dollars annually with employees performing contract research at North Charleston, and with research parks at Clemson, Columbia, and Charleston; and

Whereas, during Dr. Henderson's tenure the Research Authority has earned a worldwide reputation in the application of new technologies to the manufacturing process, serving as prime contractor for teams of organizations working together to implement technology in the national interest, a prime example being the RAMP-Rapid Acquisition of Manufactured Parts-Program, a Navy contract with the Research Authority and its team to develop a technology to allow the Department of Defense to rapidly obtain spare parts for our nation's defense, a technology the Research Authority is extending to the private sector; and

Whereas, Dr. Henderson has led the Research Park System from the point in 1983 when it owned no land to its present position involving ninety million dollars in investments employing over eight hundred people, all in the context of a focused research and development framework; and

Whereas, Dr. Henderson's achievements and contributions have not been limited to the Research Authority, as he has served as a member of the United States Defense Science Board, as Co-Chairman of the Southern Technology Council of the Southern Growth Policies Board, and as a member of the National Technology Transfer Center Industry Advisory Board; and

Whereas, during his over twelve years of service to the State of South Carolina, Dr. Henderson has made critical contributions to the welfare of this State in general, and the advancement of the high technology component of its economy in particular; and

Whereas, Dr. Henderson has chosen to retire from the Research Authority in order to pursue his other interests in an active retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their appreciation to Robert E. Henderson, Ph.D., first President and Director of the South Carolina Research Authority for his many achievements and his contributions to the people of this State on the occasion of his retirement and wish him well in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Henderson.
