A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND SERGEANT JAMES A. COOPER FOR EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AND BRAVERY WHILE IN THE PERFORMANCE OF HIS DUTIES DURING A MAIN DISTURBANCE AT THE BROAD RIVER CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION ON APRIL 17, 1995.

Whereas, Sergeant James A. Cooper, during a disturbance at the Broad River Correctional Institution on April 17, 1995, exhibited exceptional bravery without regard for his personal safety when he attempted to apprehend an inmate who subsequently stabbed him. He continued to rally his energies to protect his own life and disarm the attacker when he was savagely struck by another inmate armed with a baseball bat. Severely wounded, Sergeant Cooper fought bravely until he could no longer resist, giving fellow officers time to intervene so that he could reach safety. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate commend Sergeant James A. Cooper for exceptional service and bravery while in the performance of his duties during a main disturbance at the Broad River Correctional Institution on April 17, 1995.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Sergeant James A. Cooper.
