A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE JUDGE CRANSTON PINCKNEY FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITIES OF DORCHESTER COUNTY AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM UPON HIS APPOINTMENT AS THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN TO SERVE AS A DORCHESTER COUNTY MAGISTRATE.

Whereas, Judge Cranston Pinckney was born in the St. Mark community of St. George to parents Thaddeus and Rebecca Pinckney; and

Whereas, Judge Pinckney attended public school in Dorchester County where he went on to graduate from Williams Memorial High School; and

Whereas, Judge Pinckney enrolled in Claflin College until he was called upon to serve his country in World War II for a three year tour of duty; and

Whereas, after returning to Claflin College in 1945, Judge Pinckney graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree, and later went on to earn a Masters degree from South Carolina State College; and

Whereas, Judge Pinckney is married to the former Alice Jamison of Rowesville, and has three daughters and one foster son, Councilman Willie R. Davis; and

Whereas, Judge Pinckney worked as an elementary school teacher and later school principal until his retirement in 1983 and he also served as Title I Coordinator for Dorchester School District III in 1984; and

Whereas, Judge Pinckney is an active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, and holds membership in several professional, civic, and fraternal organizations, including Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Oakvilla Lodge #8, Senior Warden; Berkeley-Dorchester Economic Development Board; and the St. George branch of the N.A.A.C.P., 2nd Vice President; and

Whereas, he is also a Certified Lay Speaker and serves as Director of Lay Speaking for the Walterboro District, is one of the founding Trustees for the Shady Grove Campground, and also serves as President of the Dorchester County Rest Home; and

Whereas, Judge Pinckney's service to his community, state, and nation has culminated in his appointment as the first African-American to serve as a Magistrate in Dorchester County. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby honor Judge Cranston Pinckney for his leadership and dedication to the people of Dorchester County, and further congratulate Judge Pinckney for his appointment to serve as the first African-American Magistrate for Upper Dorchester County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Judge Cranston Pinckney.
