A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING NEW EBENEZER BAPTIST CHURCH OF COLUMBIA ON ITS EIGHTY-SEVENTH ANNIVERSARY.

Whereas, one of the leading churches of the Capital City -- New Ebenezer Baptist Church -- is celebrating its eighty-seventh anniversary in 1997; and

Whereas, the church provides a scholarship and tutorial program, a community missionary program, a soup kitchen for the homeless, a Ministry of Hope, a prison ministry, and outstanding spiritual guidance; and

Whereas, the church has been led throughout the twentieth century by wonderful pastors: Reverend John G. Green, Reverend Alfred Lee Peterson, Reverend Hills L. Norris, Reverend Dr. William Fair, Reverend John R. Wilson (interim pastor), and currently, Reverend Dr. Michael Ross; and

Whereas, the church has had much influence in the community over the years and has touched and shaped the lives of countless persons; the members of the church's congregation have always been dedicated, active, and committed to Christian ideals; and

Whereas, we are delighted to have this opportunity to recognize such an outstanding church and its congregation on such a splendid occasion and we share in the joy of the commemoration of the church's anniversary. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates New Ebenezer Baptist Church of Columbia on its eighty-seventh anniversary.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to New Ebenezer Baptist Church, in care of its pastor, Reverend Dr. Michael Ross.
