A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE DIVISION OF MARINE RESOURCES OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES FOR TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AND COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE IN MARINE RESOURCES RESEARCH, MANAGEMENT, AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

Whereas, a dedication ceremony was held on May 19, 1972, for the South Carolina Marine Resources Center, which was designated as the South Carolina Coastal Zone Laboratory for Marine Research, providing facilities for the Division of Marine Resources of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources; and

Whereas, the Division of Marine Resources is charged with the orderly development and conservation of the marine resources of South Carolina through planning, research, public education, and management; in doing so, the division considers the social and economic welfare of future generations, as well as the present well-being of the citizens of the Palmetto State; and

Whereas, since establishment of the division and construction of the center, the State of South Carolina has gained national and international recognition for its work in marine resources research and management, mariculture, and environmental protection; and

Whereas, the Marine Resources Center is committed to providing scientific research designed to address marine resources issues and to promoting informed, integrated management of the state's coastal ecosystems and living marine resources; the division has succeeded in this endeavor over the years in countless ways; and

Whereas, on June 11 through December 31, 1997, the Marine Resources Center will celebrate twenty-five years of continuous service to the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate the Division of Marine Resources of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for twenty-five years of dedicated service and commitment to excellence in marine resources research, management, and sustainable development.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. James A. Timmerman, Jr., Director of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
