TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE NICOLE M. KENNEDY, JEROME A. RODGERS, WHITNEY A. SABB, AND MI-KESHA C. SHAW, SECOND GRADERS AT GREELEYVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, FOR THEIR TEAM'S FIRST PLACE REGIONAL FINISH AND SELECTION AS A NATIONAL SEMIFINALIST IN THE TOSHIBA/NATIONAL SCIENCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION EXPLORAVISION AWARDS PROGRAM FOR 1998.
Whereas, Nicole M. Kennedy, Jerome A. Rodgers, Whitney A. Sabb, and Mi-Kesha C. Shaw are second grade students at Greeleyville Elementary School; and
Whereas, their team was one of five thousand which participated in the world's largest science competition, the ExploraVision Awards Program sponsored by Toshiba and the National Science Teachers Association; and
Whereas, the team was asked to envision what a form of technology might look like in twenty years and to present their ideas through descriptive essays and story boards; and
Whereas, the Greeleyville team envisioned "The Plaque Magnet" which would break down plaque and food electrically, vacuum the particles away, and even clean below the gum line, consigning plaque to an oral hygiene problem of the past; and
Whereas, the imaginative and creative efforts of the second graders, along with their teacher advisor Stephanie A. Cooper and their community advisor Varetta J. Sabb, won first place among all teams from kindergarten through third grade in a region composed of South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Georgia; and
Whereas, each of the student semifinalists receives a one hundred dollar saving bond and Greeleyville Elementary School receives a Toshiba television and VCR; and
Whereas, the team has also been awarded five hundred dollars to develop a video presentation of its story board for the national competition; and
Whereas, these bright and innovative students represent the extraordinary visionaries of the future. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members recognize and congratulate Nicole M.
