A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CREATE A COMMITTEE OF FIVE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, APPOINTED BY THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, TO INVESTIGATE AND REPORT BACK TO THE FULL MEMBERSHIP BY MAY 14, 1998, THE DETERMINATIVE CRITERIA ACTUALLY EMPLOYED BY THE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA IN ADMITTING STUDENTS INTO ITS PROGRAMS.

Whereas, the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston is a state-supported institution founded to train physicians and other medical personnel; and

Whereas, the people of the State of South Carolina have benefited greatly not only from the fundamental medical training MUSC accomplishes, but also from the distinguished and creative research and medical innovations it produces; and

Whereas, a goal of the State of South Carolina is to translate these accomplishments, distinctions, and innovations into the highest level of accessible medical care for all of its citizens; and

Whereas, the achievement of that goal requires that medical personnel of all backgrounds be trained for the delivery of medical care to all of this state's diverse areas and populations; and

Whereas, the admissions criteria for MUSC can further this goal by ensuring that qualified applicants of varied backgrounds not only are encouraged to pursue medical training there, but also actually are selected for admission into its programs. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives create a committee of five members of the House, appointed by the Speaker of the House, to investigate and report back to the full membership by May 14, 1998, the determinative criteria actually employed by the Medical University of South Carolina in admitting students into its programs.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. James C. Edwards, President, MUSC.
