A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 7-11-16 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT IN ORDER TO QUALIFY AS A CANDIDATE TO RUN IN A PRIMARY OR GENERAL ELECTION, CANDIDATES MUST FILE WITH THE APPROPRIATE SUPERVISING AUTHORITY A CRIMINAL RECORDS CHECK REGARDING THEMSELVES FROM THE SOUTH CAROLINA LAW ENFORCEMENT DIVISION OR THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 7-11-16. In addition to all other requirements of law, in order to qualify as a candidate to run in a primary or general election, candidates must file with the appropriate supervising authority a criminal records check regarding themselves from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division or the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
