A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MR. STANLEY DONEN, A NATIVE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, UPON HIS RECEIPT OF A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT OSCAR AT THE 1998 ACADEMY AWARDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were thrilled to see and learn of the presentation of a lifetime achievement Oscar to Mr. Stanley Donen at the 1998 Academy Awards; and

Whereas, Stanley Donen is a native of South Carolina and grew up in Columbia during the 1930's. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1940 and members of his family still live in the Columbia area; and

Whereas, upon leaving South Carolina, he went to New York City and began a very successful career as a dancer, film director, and choreographer and compiled a body of work that places him among the most distinguished members of the entertainment industry; and

Whereas, he had never received an Oscar, although he produced the 1986 Academy Awards, and upon his receipt of the Oscar he thrilled television audiences worldwide with an entertaining and captivating rendition of "Cheek to Cheek" using his Oscar as a partner. This was truly a magical moment in the proud history of the Academy Awards; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate this truly amazing man who throughout his show business career has not only contributed substantially to his art but has done so with a grace that has brought deserved credit not only upon him but upon his home state as well.
