A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS AND THEIR COACH CY ALEXANDER AND HIS STAFF ON THEIR OUTSTANDING TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING THE 1997-98 MEN'S BASKETBALL SEASON, INCLUDING A MEAC TITLE, A TRIP TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT, AND AN OVERALL RECORD OF 22-8.

Whereas, the South Carolina State University Bulldogs, led by Coach Cy Alexander, posted a 22-8 overall record in intercollegiate basketball play in 1997-98; and

Whereas, the team's 16-2 record against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes resulted in a first runner-up finish for the regular season and its second conference tournament crown in three years; and

Whereas, that outstanding effort earned the Bulldogs a slot in the South Regional NCAA basketball tournament and a more than respectable first-round showing against the eventual champions, the Kentucky Wildcats; and

Whereas, the team's other accomplishments include being named National Champion by American Sports Wire and Sheridan Broadcasting Network and school records for most consecutive wins (twelve) and most conference wins (sixteen); and

Whereas, the team members were also recognized for their special efforts during the season:

MEAC All-Tournament Team

Roderick Blakney and Raheem Waller - First Team

Tyler Brown - Second Team

Roderick Blakney - Tournament Most Outstanding Player

Tyler Brown - Gillette Player of the Game (Championship Game)

All-MEAC Team

Roderick Blakney - First Team and Runner-up for Player of the Year

Raheem Waller - Second Team

Tyler Brown - Honorable Mention

All-MEAC Rookie Team

James Jones - First Team and Runner-up for Rookie of the Year

Whereas, Rodney (Moo Moo) Blakney also has been awarded his second John McLendon trophy as the most outstanding player for the nation's historically black colleges and universities and has been invited to play in the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational , a showcase for potential NBA talent, and the Target Sports Black College All-Star Game; and

Whereas, these young men and their coaches have established a high standard of athletic and personal performance on their way to bringing pride to their University and this State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly do hereby honor the South Carolina State University Bulldogs and their Coach Cy Alexander and his staff on their outstanding team and individual accomplishments during the 1997-98 men's basketball season, including a MEAC title, a second trip to the NCAA tournament, and an overall record of 22-8.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to President Leroy Davis on behalf of the University and the Bulldog team.
