TO REQUEST THE COMMISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO NAME A PORTION OF INTERSTATE 95, BEGINNING AT THE SEVEN MILE MARKER EXTENDING SOUTH TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA WELCOME CENTER, IN MEMORY OF TROOPER FIRST CLASS BRUCE KENNETH SMALLS, KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY ON SEPTEMBER 27, 1985.
Whereas, Trooper First Class Bruce K. Smalls of Grays Hill was shot and killed in the line of duty at the age of thirty on September 27, 1985; and
Whereas, Trooper Smalls served his State as a Highway Patrolman for nine years, and nobly and honorably gave his life in the service of his fellow South Carolinians; and
Whereas, Trooper Smalls served so honorably that his funeral was attended by nearly three hundred lawmen from at least ten states; and
Whereas, Trooper Smalls also served his country in the United States Army, and continued to serve as a sergeant in the Army National Guard until his untimely death; and
Whereas, Trooper Smalls was an outstanding member of his community, holding positions as superintendent of the Sunday School class at New Church of Christ in Grays Hill, president of the Young People's Movement at that church, vice president of the Beaufort Elementary School PTO, and vice president of the Grays Hill Community Association; and
Whereas, Trooper Smalls is survived by two sons, Kevin M. and Bruce K. II, and by his mother, Mrs. Thelma S. Blue. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express sorrow at the tragic death of Trooper First Class Bruce K. Smalls and continue to remember his proud life and service to the State of South Carolina, and request that the Commission of the Department of Transportation name a portion of Interstate 95, beginning at the seven mile marker extending South to the South Carolina Welcome Center, in honor of his memory.
Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to Bruce K. Smalls II, Kevin M. Smalls, and Mrs. Thelma S. Blue.
