EXPRESSING SORROW AT THE DEATH OF THE HONORABLE JAMES WILLIAM "JIMMY" POWELL, III, OF TURBEVILLE, HUSBAND OF JUDGE ANNELLE GREEN POWELL, CHIEF MAGISTRATE OF CLARENDON COUNTY, AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO THE MEMBERS OF THE POWELL FAMILY.

Whereas, The Honorable James William "Jimmy" Powell, III, of Turbeville died at the age of fifty-seven on October 4, 1998; and

Whereas, he was the husband of Judge Annelle Green Powell, Chief Magistrate of Clarendon County; and

Whereas, Mr. Powell was a native of Clarendon County, a barber, and former owner and operator of Jimmy's Barber Shop; he was elected to Clarendon County Council in 1990 and served as the council's vice chairman; he was a Mason and a member of Fidelity Lodge No. 394; he was also a member of the Turbeville Ruritans and a member of Turbeville First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon; and

Whereas, he was an auto racer and a great fan of racing, having begun the sport in 1956; he stopped racing for sport in 1983; and

Whereas, he was an outstanding individual who was a wonderful asset to Clarendon County; he gave greatly of his time, talents, and resources to his community and will be missed tremendously; and

Whereas, Mr. Powell is survived by his widow, Judge Powell, of Turbeville; by his mother, Mrs. James William Powell, Jr., of Turbeville; by his daughters, Helen Welsh and Susan Anderson, both of Turbeville; by a sister, Jean Boykin, of Turbeville; and by two grandchildren, Cameron and Sloane Welsh; and

Whereas, we, the members of the General Assembly, want Mr. Powell's family to know that they have our deepest sympathy and are uppermost in our thoughts. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of the Honorable James William "Jimmy" Powell, III, of Turbeville, husband of Judge Annelle Green Powell, Chief Magistrate of Clarendon County, and extends sympathy to the members of the Powell family.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to The Honorable Annelle Green Powell and the members of Clarendon County Council.
