A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MRS. JOHNNIE RUTH JENKINS OF BARNWELL COUNTY ON HER MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED AND OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO HER COMMUNITY UPON HER RETIREMENT FROM THE AIKEN-BARNWELL-LEXINGTON COMMUNITY ACTION COMMISSION.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives have learned with deep regret that Mrs. Johnnie Ruth Jenkins has retired from the Aiken-Barnwell-Lexington Community Action Commission after many years of exemplary service to this agency; and

Whereas, she was instrumental in the implementation of the Voter Rights Acts of 1963, 1965, and 1966 in Barnwell County and throughout South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jenkins volunteered her time and talents to help establish the Salkehatchie Community Action Commission, and

Whereas, she worked tirelessly to establish the Head Start Programs in Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, and Hampton Counties which are giving youngsters in those counties an opportunity to begin their formal education at an early age; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jenkins was a pioneer in the Civil Rights movement in Barnwell County and throughout South Carolina; and

Whereas, she unselfishly has given her time and talents to help those in need through her efforts as coordinator for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program, the Summer Lunch Program, several Holiday Food Basket Drives, and the Christmas Gift Program; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jenkins is the devoted wife of Mr. Willie Matthew Jenkins, Sr., and together they are the parents of five children, the proud grandparents of eleven grandchildren, and the doting great-grandparents of five great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives would like to publicly recognize and thank Mrs. Johnnie Ruth Jenkins for her loyal and dedicated service to South Carolina upon the occasion of her retirement from the Aiken-Barnwell-Lexington Community Action Commission. Now, therefore,
