A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND ALL OF THE KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE TEACHERS AT SATCHEL FORD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND ESPECIALLY KINDERGARTEN TEACHER LISA COLLINS, FIRST GRADE TEACHER THELMA GRAHAM, AND PRINCIPAL VIRGINIA LACY, FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AND INITIATIVE IN PURSUING A PROGRAM THAT RESULTED IN ALL OF SATCHEL FORD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL'S KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE STUDENTS BEING INTRODUCED TO THE WEALTH OF LIBRARY RESOURCES AND OBTAINING THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL LIBRARY CARDS, AND ALSO TO CONGRATULATE ALL THE KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE STUDENTS AT SATCHEL FORD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ON HAVING OBTAINED THEIR LIBRARY CARDS, AND TO WISH THEM WELL IN ALL OF THEIR EDUCATIONAL ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is well known that children become successful students by becoming good readers, and they become good readers by reading good books, magazines, and stories that are entertaining, instructional, and of interest to them; and

Whereas, it is essential to quality education that students of any age develop positive images of the library as a place where books, magazines, films, tapes, and other interesting and creative things are made available for recreation as well as for education and research; and

Whereas, encouraging and motivating young children to read good books at an early age and to visit their local libraries gives them an on-site experience while developing an appreciation of books, exposes them to excellent children's literature, and impresses upon them that the library is a valuable resource; and

Whereas, recognizing there is a definite link between children's reading and how well they do in school, that reading is the cornerstone and the foundation of lifelong learning, and intending to ignite the love of learning in their students by introducing them to the wealth of knowledge to be found in libraries, kindergarten teacher Lisa Collins, first grade teacher Thelma Graham, and Principal Virginia Lacy of Satchel Ford Elementary School instituted a resoundingly successful library card campaign that resulted in all of the kindergarten and first grade students at Satchel Ford Elementary School being exposed to the wealth of resources and knowledge available in libraries, and in each student obtaining his or her own library card; and

Whereas, having introduced their students to library resources and encouraged them to love and respect libraries, books, reading, and independent thinking, Satchel Ford Elementary School teachers Lisa Collins and Thelma Graham and Principal Virginia Lacy, ably supported by kindergarten teachers Eugenia Dehart, Peggy Ledlie, and Suzanne Smith, and first grade teachers Molly Boozer, Allianne Duvall, Laura Jackson, Jane Morgan, and Pam Tucker have opened a world of wonder and learning to their charges that is limited only by their imagination, and have given them an excellent start on receiving a quality education. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend all of the kindergarten and first grade teachers at Satchel Ford Elementary School, and especially kindergarten teacher Lisa Collins, first grade teacher Thelma Graham, and Principal Virginia Lacy, for their outstanding leadership and initiative in pursuing a program that resulted in all of Satchel Ford Elementary School's kindergarten and first grade students being introduced to the wealth of library resources and obtaining their own individual library cards, and also congratulate all the kindergarten and first grade students at Satchel Ford Elementary School on having obtained their library cards and wish them well in all of their educational endeavors.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to Lisa Collins, Thelma Graham, Virginia Lacy, and to Satchel Ford Elementary School.
