A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE APPRECIATION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO DAVID M. MATHIS OF EDGEFIELD COUNTY FOR HIS DEDICATION TO EDUCATION AND FOR THE EXCELLENT WORK HE HAS DONE AS PRINCIPAL OF MERRIWEATHER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND TO WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN HIS ADMINISTRATIVE POSITION WITH THE EDGEFIELD COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT.

Whereas, David M. Mathis of Edgefield County began his educational career as a teacher at Johnston Elementary School eighteen years ago; and

Whereas, later Mr. Mathis moved to Merriweather Elementary School to continue his career as a teacher; and

Whereas, as it soon became evident to his superiors that Mr. Mathis was looked up to by all around him for his leadership abilities and that he would be an excellent administrator, he was encouraged to pursue certification in that area; and

Whereas, in 1987, Mr. Mathis assumed the responsibility as principal of Merriweather Elementary School which, at that time, educated one thousand students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade; and

Whereas, Mr. Mathis served at the helm of this school through very exciting times; the district implemented a building program for this school because of tremendous growth in the area, and the school was divided with one serving child development through fifth grade students and the other serving sixth through eighth grade students; and

Whereas, Mr. Mathis became the principal of the nine hundred student elementary school and, under his leadership, the school has come to be recognized as being in the top five percent of all elementary schools in the State; and

Whereas, under his supervision, the school was a winner of one of the first exemplary writing awards given in the State; and

Whereas, currently the school has obtained mentoring status which is considered to be an elite position among schools; also, the Department of Education has put this school in deregulated status because of its extremely high test scores for three consecutive years; and

Whereas, Mr. Mathis maintains active membership in three important professional educator organizations: he is a member of the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the Association of Edgefield County Administrators, and he is an officer in the South Carolina Association of School Administrators; and

Whereas, Mr. Mathis now will assume an important leadership role in the administration of the Edgefield County School District from which his enthusiasm and dedication for high quality education will benefit many more schools and many more students in the district. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their appreciation to David M. Mathis of Edgefield County for his dedication to education and for the excellent work he has done as principal of Merriweather Elementary School and wish him continued success in his administrative position with the Edgefield County School District.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to David M. Mathis.
