A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE CAPTAIN AND MRS. PAUL B. SMITH FOR THE WONDROUS AND JOYOUS EVENT OF CELEBRATING THEIR FIFTY-SEVENTH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY ON JULY 5, 1999.

Whereas, with great pride and admiration, the members of the General Assembly have learned that Captain and Mrs. Paul B. Smith of Atlanta, Georgia, will celebrate their fifty-seventh wedding anniversary on July 5, 1999; and

Whereas, Paul Bridges Smith was born on December 8, 1918, in Olean, New York and Jean Sortore Smith was born on March 3, 1918, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and

Whereas, Paul and Jean Smith were married in Norfolk, Virginia, on July 5, 1942; and

Whereas, in the service to their country they lived on the East, West, and Gulf coasts of the United States, to wit: Bath, Maine; Norfolk, Virginia; Annapolis, Maryland; Vallejo, California; Panama City, Florida; Washington, D.C.; Charleston, South Carolina; San Diego, California; Agana, Guam; Long Beach, California; and Atlanta, Georgia; and

Whereas, Captain Smith, a patriot and hero, served his country with distinction in World War II, earning the Silver Star, Legion of Merit with Gold Star, Presidential Unit Citation, and numerous campaign medals; and

Whereas, there were many acts of valor for which Captain Smith distinguished himself; for example, then Lieutenant Smith, as the Gunnery Officer for the Laffey (DD-724) led his well trained gun crews so well that they performed flawlessly throughout an eighty minute attack by twenty-two kamikazes and it was Captain Smith's action which destroyed one of the final kamikazes just before it was about to deliver a mortal blow to the destroyer; and

Whereas, Admiral F. Julian Becton, then skipper of the Laffey honored Captain Smith as his hero stating, that by his quick action, then Lieutenant Smith averted disaster; and today the Laffey is still afloat as a museum ship at Patriots Point in Charleston, South Carolina, as documented in the Proceedings of the U.S. Naval Institute, March 1989; and

Whereas, this couple has given so much of themselves to others in the communities in which they have lived; and

Whereas, Captain and Mrs. Smith have been members of Saint Bartholomew's Episcopal Church for the last twenty years, and this is where Captain Smith has earned the nickname "Joseph" due to all of the volunteer carpentry work he does for the church; and

Whereas, Captain Smith has served his community as a Rotarian for twenty years and, now a member of the Northlake Rotary Club, Captain Smith earned the honor and distinction of being named the Rotarian of the Year by truly living in service above self; and

Whereas, Jean Smith is a talented and gifted artisan and, as a homemaker, provided unceasing care and love for her children and support of the family insuring that future generations of the Smith family would know love, faith, and happiness; and

Whereas, the Smiths were blessed with four lovely children: James Emerson Smith, Paul Bridges Smith, Jr., Stephen George Smith, and Marcia Smith Anderson; and

Whereas, the Smiths are further blessed with nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and

Whereas, the Smith's children, their children's children and their children are the beneficiaries of their legacy of faith, duty, honor, and service to community, neighbors, and country; and

Whereas, the Smith's strong morals and Christian values have been wonderful examples to their children, their children's families, and all their many friends and acquaintances over the years of this century; and

Whereas, the strength of their union is a true example of commitment, devotion, Christian love, faith, and endurance; and

Whereas, their innumerable friends respect, admire, and love them deeply for their outstanding qualities and exemplary deeds; and

Whereas, we in the General Assembly honor the true meaning of marriage when we honor Jean and Paul Smith and extend to them our best wishes. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina recognize and congratulate Captain and Mrs. Paul B. Smith of Atlanta, Georgia, for the wondrous and joyous upcoming event of celebrating their fifty-seventh wedding anniversary on July 5, 1999.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Captain and Mrs. Paul B. Smith.
