A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF ONE OF THE PALMETTO STATE'S MOST PROMINENT AND RESPECTED LEADERS, THE HONORABLE ROBERT CLAUDE WASSON OF LAURENS COUNTY, A FORMER MEMBER OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, A FORMER SOUTH CAROLINA STATE SENATOR, AND FORMER CHAIRMAN OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA TAX COMMISSION AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE TO HIS FAMILY AND COUNTLESS FRIENDS.

Whereas, The Honorable Robert Claude Wasson of Hickory Tavern departed this life on Sunday, January 24, 1999, at the age of eighty-six; and

Whereas, Robert C. Wasson was born on May 18, 1912, in Laurens County and was the son of the late Claude Washington Wasson and Effie Jane Owens; and

Whereas, after graduating from Hickory Tavern High School (1930), he attended Presbyterian College (1930-32) and studied law at the University of South Carolina (1932); and

Whereas, elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, Robert Wasson represented Laurens County in 1937-1940, 1945-1952, and 1955-1956. He was again elected to represent Laurens County, but this time in the Senate, serving from 1957-1960. During his legislative career, he served on several House and Senate committees and was appointed Chairman of the House Education and Public Works Committee. He also served as an ex officio trustee of the University of South Carolina and Winthrop College. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Public Service from Presbyterian College when he served on the Board of Visitors; and

Whereas, on February 9, 1960, Robert Wasson resigned his Senate seat after being appointed a member of the South Carolina Tax Commission. He served as president of several national and regional tax associations, and retired as Chairman of the South Carolina Tax Commission after twenty-two years serving under the appointment of six South Carolina Governors. In retirement, he served as a tax consultant to the South Carolina State Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Board of Economic Advisors to the State Budget and Control Board; and

Whereas, surviving are his wife of sixty-six years, Claudia Nash Wasson and children: William N. Wasson of Greenville; Mrs. Tom (Barbara) Fischer of Laurens; and Mrs. Marion (Jane) Burns of Columbia; and

Whereas, he was a life-long member of Friendship Presbyterian, a ruling elder, Sunday school teacher, clerk of the Session, and served as the first moderator of Calvary Presbytery, Presbyterian Church in America; and

Whereas, Robert Wasson was a great and beloved leader, a true friend to us, his colleagues, and a remarkably talented and dedicated public servant who will be missed by the citizens of Laurens County and the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, honor the memory of one of the Palmetto State's most prominent and respected leaders, The Honorable Robert Claude Wasson of Laurens County, a former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, a former South Carolina State Senator, and former Chairman of the South Carolina Tax Commission and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and countless friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of The Honorable Robert Claude Wasson.
