A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL "WILDCATS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND THEIR COACHES FOR AN EXCEPTIONAL SEASON AND ON THE OCCASION OF WINNING THE 1999-2000 CLASS AAAA STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note with pride the extraordinary achievement of the Lexington High School "Wildcats" Boys Basketball Team, under the tutelage of Head Coach Bailey Harris, on capturing the 1999-2000 Class AAAA State Basketball Championship; and

Whereas, most teams dream of getting to the state championship game. Lexington has been there four out of the last five years, and has won two state championships; and

Whereas, throughout the playoffs, the "Wildcats" were able to take advantage of the other teams. As a result, their strong will carried them all the way to the title as they repeatedly victimized Marlboro County in a resounding 61-57 victory; and

Whereas, in addition to natural athletic ability and teamwork, skilled coaching and player dedication are also essential to winning, all of which have been evident during their past season; and

Whereas, under the outstanding leadership of Head Coach Bailey Harris, along with his Assistant Coaches, Jim Parker, Rick Bouknight, Bret Jones, Eric Burrow, Joey Lawson, and Jason Cochcroft; supported by Athletic Director Jim Satterfield; Principal Allen Whitacre; Athletic Trainer Damone Leaphart; and Manager Jeffrey Rhoten motivated the competitive spirit, teamwork, and excellent performances of each member of the Lexington High School "Wildcats" Boys Basketball Team; and

Whereas, the Lexington High Boys Basketball roster for the 1999-2000 season included the following players: Alex Spotts, Shelton Everette, Benjamin Ryan, Brad Salters, Bill Gunter, Will Clarke, Kenny Burr, Adam Gibson, Demetrius Summers, Juan Ornalez, Wes Smith, Paul Brown, Blake Sistare, Arnold Screen, and Scott Davis; and

Whereas, special recognition is due Lexington junior forward Blake Sistare who scored a career-high twenty points in this championship game. From the way he was playing, one might think he owned the ball -- turns out he did. The South Carolina High School League had called Lexington High School and asked to borrow some basketballs for the championship games. Spalding is the official ball, and the only ones the league had on hand were new. They wanted used ones that had been well broken in for the state championship games. Coach Harris called on his players to bring in their Spalding balls, since at the high school, they had only another brand. When the game was almost over, teammate Bill Gunter was substituted in with direct orders from Coach Harris to retrieve the ball. However, amid the postgame chaos and celebration, Bill was not successful, and Blake's ball was used for all three state championship games the following day. It had his number (34) and his first name written in ink. Bill Gunter did manage to retrieve the ball and returned it back to Blake Sistare; and

Whereas, the "Wildcats" victory can also be credited to the support of many others including the cheerleaders, student body, the faculty and staff, and the loyal fans of Lexington High School; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might recognize the extraordinary achievements of Lexington High School "Wildcats" Boys Basketball Team, Head Coach Bailey Harris and other school officials. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend hearty congratulations to the Lexington High School "Wildcats" Boys Basketball Team and their coaches for an exceptional season and on the occasion of winning the 1999-2000 Class AAAA State Basketball Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Bailey Harris.
