A HOUSE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING DEACONESS ERNESTINE TOLES ON THE OCCASION OF THE DR. WILLIAM H. GRAY, JR., MEMORIAL CONCERT AT BRIGHT HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH IN PHILADELPHIA HONORING HER OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY AND TO BRIGHT HOPE.

Whereas, Ernestine Toles and her twin sister, Emogene, were born in Covington, Georgia, to the late Joe and Maggie Williams; and

Whereas, they grew up in the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Covington, which was founded by their maternal great, great grandfather, The Reverend Toney Baker; and

Whereas, after their graduation from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Ernestine pursued graduate study in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at Temple University; and

Whereas, she spent twenty-seven years in a compassionate career in social service with the Philadelphia Department of Social Services in the area of foster care; and

Whereas, she had the distinction of having the largest number of foster children on a foster care caseload to graduate from high school, enroll in college, and graduate from college; and

Whereas, she has been an active member of Bright Hope Baptist Church since 1952, serving as president of the Deaconess Society for seventeen years, charter member of the Scholarship Committee, and longtime treasurer of the Mary Gray Club; and

Whereas, it is fitting that Brother Roger W. Cobb chooses to honor Deaconess Toles for her community service by having his sister, The Honorable Gilda Cobb-Hunter, South Carolina State Representative and noted advocate for social services, recognize Mrs. Toles' achievements by way of this resolution. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives recognize Deaconess Ernestine Toles on the occasion of the Dr. William H. Gray, Jr., Memorial Concert at Bright Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia honoring her outstanding service to the community and to Bright Hope.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Deaconess Toles.
