TO EXTEND THE HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE SCHOOL OFFICIALS, COACHES, AND MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH AIKEN HIGH SCHOOL "THOROUGHBREDS" MEN'S TENNIS TEAM ON THE OCCASION OF WINNING THE 2000 CLASS AAAA STATE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR.
Whereas, the "Thoroughbreds" of South Aiken High School clinched the Class AAAA State Tennis Championship with an incredible victory over Spring Valley High School on Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Richland County Northeast Tennis Center in Columbia; and
Whereas, Spring Valley High School's bid for a major upset to foil a third consecutive Class AAAA championship by South Aiken High School was doomed from the get-go against the overwhelming favorites. The attitude of Spring Valley was they had nothing to lose and all the pressure was on South Aiken; and
Whereas, the "Thoroughbreds" never felt the pressure, capping a spectacular, if somewhat surprising, undefeated season at 19-0 and with an overall 59-1 record over the past three years; and
Whereas, this impressive level of competition and excellence could not have been accomplished without the leadership and guidance of Head Coach Mike Hicks and Assistant Coach Donald Moody; and
Whereas, the young men representing South Aiken High in this signal achievement, Michael Barber, Thomas Beckham, Tillman Busbee, Harry Cantey, Roddy Cantey, Phillip Chow, Chris Church, Ken Dry, Michael Huffer, Jason McAlhaney, Anand Pariyadath, Ryan Parsons, Matt Robinson, Jarrett Smith, and Robert Smith, are exemplars of the best in student athletics in high school athletic competition; and
Whereas, this championship marked a storybook ending to the high school careers of seniors Roddy Cantey, Phillip Chow, and Matt Robinson; and
Whereas, the success of the 2000 "Thoroughbreds" Men's Tennis Team has not only brought pride to Principal Bill Gassman, Athletic Director Karen Carter, and South Aiken High School and its loyal and enthusiastic students, administration, and supporters but to all of Aiken County and the Palmetto State; and
Whereas, the General Assembly would like to publicly recognize and congratulate each player, member of the staff, coach, and especially Head Coach Mike Hicks upon the conclusion of a truly memorable undefeated season. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend their hearty congratulations to the school officials, coaches, and members of the South Aiken High School "Thoroughbreds" Men's Tennis Team on the occasion of winning the 2000 Class AAAA State Tennis Championship for the third year in a row.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Mike Hicks.
