A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE RAINBOW CHILD CARE AND KINDERGARTEN OF COLUMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF ITS FOURTEENTH ANNIVERSARY AND TO EXTEND THE GRATITUDE OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FOR THE EXCELLENT WORK RAINBOW DOES IN PREPARING ITS PRESCHOOL STUDENTS FOR THE RIGORS OF FORMAL EDUCATION.

Whereas, Columbia is the home of one of the Midland's best kept secrets which is the success of a family owned daycare facility, the Rainbow Child Care and Kindergarten. This facility excels in its work of preparing young people up to the age of seven for the academic and social challenges which they will face as they grow up; and

Whereas, the Rainbow Child Care and Kindergarten exists because Reverend Ernest Smith and his wife, Joyce Jordan-Smith, had a dream that they wanted to start an excellent preschool for children of all races, religions and national origins. The school began in June of 1986 upon being licensed by the Department of Social Services; and

Whereas, the school was fully enrolled immediately and, in fact, now maintains a lengthy waiting list because of its excellent reputation; and

Whereas, since June 1986, over three hundred children have attended the Rainbow Child Care and Kindergarten. Significantly, all of its graduates from the 1986 and 1987 classes are now attending college. Its students excel academically; and

Whereas, Rainbow Child Care and Kindergarten offers its students a well-rounded program which includes Spanish, phonics, and a computer lab. The school ministers to the needs of the whole child; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives extends its gratitude to the staff of the Rainbow Child Care and Kindergarten for their dedication, loving care and the excellent academic foundation they provide to the Rainbow students. The director is Joyce Jordan-Smith; her husband, Reverend Ernest Smith, is the assistant director; their daughter, Kimberly Joy Smith, teaches Spanish and gives computer instruction; and Ernest Carlton is the aide who works in every area of the school and is an excellent role model for the "little rainbows". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the Rainbow Child Care and Kindergarten of Columbia is recognized and commended on the occasion of its fourteenth anniversary and is extended the gratitude of all the members of the House of Representatives for the excellent work it does in preparing its preschool students for the rigors of formal education.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Reverend Ernest Smith and Joyce Jordan-Smith.
