TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE COLONEL DENNIS E. DREW OF GREENWOOD ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE AFTER THIRTY YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS A MARINE CORPS OFFICER.
Whereas, Colonel Dennis E. Drew was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps on January 1, 1969, over thirty years ago, and while on active duty, served his country in the Republic of Viet Nam; and
Whereas, Colonel Drew was released from active duty in 1972, but immediately joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve; and
Whereas, during the next twenty-seven years, Colonel Drew continued to serve his country as a Marine Corps Reservist in such capacities as platoon commander, executive officer and company commander, battalion commander and division assistant chief of staff, in several instances involving extended tours of active duty; and
Whereas, his service required duty throughout the United States and abroad, including in addition to Viet Nam, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Rochester, New York; Atlanta, Georgia; Quantico, Virginia; Camp Ripley, Minnesota; Fort Pickett, Virginia; Camp Pendleton, California; Ahaus Tera, Honduras; and New Orleans, Louisiana; and
Whereas, during his outstanding career in the United States Marine Corps, on active duty and as a reservist, Colonel Drew and his units consistently achieved excellence in training and readiness and were so recognized with awards and recognitions such as the Melvin J. Moss Memorial Trophy in 1979 and 1980; and
Whereas, Colonel Drew, on active duty and as a reservist, excelled in leadership roles such as designing a Senior Staff NCO Course at Quantico in 1982 and in 1996, serving as Director of Logistics for the Joint Task Force Olympics in Atlanta; and
Whereas, in civilian life, he graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Education Degree in 1969, and received his Masters Degree in Media and Instructional Development in 1973 from East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina; and
Whereas, in Greenwood, South Carolina, during 1975, Colonel and Mrs. Drew founded The Sunshine House, currently a highly successful group of sixty-two child development centers located in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee with its headquarters remaining in Greenwood; and
Whereas, Colonel Drew is Past President and Chairman of the Board of the South Carolina Child Care Association and remains a member of its board of directors, serves as Vice Chairman of the South Carolina Governor's Advisory Board on Child Day Care Regulations and Chairman of the South Carolina Child Care Credentialing Committee and is a member of the South Carolina Alliance for Children; and
Whereas, he is Past President of the Emerald Sertoma Club in Greenwood, South Carolina, and was District Sertoman of the Year for 1984-85 and 1985-86. He is also a member of the Charleston Southern University Board of Visitors; and
Whereas, Colonel Drew and his wife, Roseann, have two lovely daughters, Lorelie Brown and Kristen; and
Whereas, Dennis E. Drew, both in the military and as a civilian, has distinguished himself with a lifetime of accomplishments and contributions to his community, state, and nation; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to publicly recognize him for his thirty years of military service in the United States Marine Corps, on active duty and as a reservist, upon his retirement ceremony on May 8, 1999. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Colonel Dennis E. Drew of Greenwood, on the occasion of his retirement from the United States Marine Corps Reserve after thirty years of distinguished service as a Marine Corps Officer.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Colonel Drew.
