TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-1-530 SO AS TO REQUIRE ALL CERTIFIED EMPLOYEES AT A PUBLIC MIDDLE OR HIGH SCHOOL AND ALL CERTIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT EMPLOYEES TO TEACH ONE COURSE ONE SEMESTER EACH SCHOOL YEAR, TO PROVIDE EXCEPTIONS, AND TO DIRECT THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO PROMULGATE REGULATIONS ESTABLISHING EXEMPTIONS.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 59-1-530. (A) A certified employee at a public middle school or high school and any certified school district employee must teach one course one semester each school year regardless of the employee's position in the school or district unless the employee is a school librarian or media specialist or unless the employee is exempt pursuant to regulations promulgated by the Department of Education.
(B) The department shall promulgate regulations necessary to implement this section including providing for exemptions to the above requirement."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
