A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXTENDING THE SUPPORT OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE COMMENDABLE EFFORTS OF THE DEDICATED CITIZENS FROM THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR IN MAKING KENSINGTON MANSION A FOCAL POINT FOR EDUCATION, CULTURAL AND HERITAGE TOURISM FOR ALL THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, South Carolina is blessed with a rich cultural heritage; and

Whereas, the Kensington Mansion, as a product of this state's cotton era, provides unique educational opportunities; and

Whereas, the Kensington Mansion serves as a heritage site and educational museum for all the people of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism are interested in further developing and seeing to it that this resource is presented as a focal point for heritage tourism; and

Whereas, International Paper and its predecessor, Union Camp, have been dedicated to the restoration and outstanding preservation of the historic structure on the site; and

Whereas, the Scarborough-Hamer Foundation has developed the interior resources by providing over a million dollars in funds, furniture, and furnishings for the historic structure on site; and

Whereas, the efforts of government, International Paper, and Scarborough-Hammer Foundation complement one another and provide the initiative for all parties to come together in a public-private partnership to operate and publicly display historically, architecturally, and archaeology significant sites, structures and contents and to advance knowledge and science through research and applicable use of timberland and cropland. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the South Carolina General Assembly resolves to lend its support to the commendable efforts of dedicated citizens from the public and private sector in making Kensington Mansion a focal point for education, cultural, and heritage tourism for all the people of South Carolina.
